October Garden Academy

Our initial lesson with Adam Frost and the first question we were asked: What are your career dreams? Not just to find a job that you enjoy doing, he wanted big answers, the kind you don’t frequently share because they seem a little far-fetched. However, in a room of aspiring horticulturalists it was exciting to share and hear each other’s ambitions. Interestingly we all said that gardening with our parents and grandparents was our inspiration to pursue horticulture. I love that fact. There is something so fantastic about our families being our inspiration, I doubt a roomful of office workers would share those kinds of connections.

The rest of the day consisted of ‘Adam’s Introduction to Garden Design’. The overall message? If you want to be a designer there is nothing to stop you – it is not an art form, it’s a craft that given practice and perseverance anyone with a passion for plants, people and design can do.

We are incredibly privileged to be taught garden design and also an RHS Practical Gardening qualification at the beautiful Barnsdale gardens. I may be too young to remember Jeff Hamilton presenting Gardeners World from Barnsdale, however he is still a household name I have heard of. I’ve been watching old episodes of Gardeners World online and it is fascinating to see how the garden has matured and very exciting when I recognise a corner of the garden and know that I’ve stood there too!

The photos above show what we got up to on our RHS days; soil, digging, dividing, taking cuttings and getting our hands dirty! The weather Gods were on our side and fortunately we avoided getting wet all week! I could talk, or type, at great length about all the awesome things we did out in the garden, but I would probably be sat typing all night. However to summarise, just incase anyone was doubtful about how much I enjoyed myself, I can not think of a better way to learn and have fun than to be outside getting stuck in.

Looking forward to our next trip to Barnsdale already.
